Kathy MacVane, widow of former South Portland Police Officer Peter MacVane, leads South Portland, Scarborough and Cape Elizabeth police officers up Main Street in South Portland Wednesday as part of the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run to benefit Maine Special Olympics.

Peter MacVane, a 34-year veteran of the department, volunteered with Special Olympics, including as an organizer of the annual New Year’s Day Lobster Dip at Old Orchard Beach. He died last December, and Kathy MacVane was asked by police officers to lead the leg of the run from the Scarborough town line to the torch passing with Portland Police Officers on Veteran’s Memorial Bridge.

The torch had been passed to Scarborough officers at the Saco city limit on U.S. Route 1.

“I was honored they asked me to be involved. It is a little bittersweet because Peter is not here,” MacVane said about her first torch run.
