TOPSHAM — The town will advertise for a new planning director after completion of the six-month probationary period of Town Manager Rich Roedner.

Roedner, the former planner, was hired in October 2002. He became the interim town manager when Cornell Knight departed in early March, and was later hired unanimously by the Board of Selectmen.

Since then, the planner’s post has been filled in an acting capacity by Rod Melanson, Topsham’s natural resource manager/assistant planner.

Roedner’s probationary period concludes Sept. 10, and “until that’s up, we’re not going to pursue filling the planning position,” he said.

Because the position is covered by a union contract, the first step will be to advertise in-house. If no one is found, the search will be expanded, Roedner said.
