TOPSHAM — Along with accepting bids for two new police cruisers, the Board of Selectmen voted June 17 to obtain an emergency response vehicle from the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office.

The board voted unanimously to accept Quirk Ford of Augusta’s low bid of $23,221 each for two 2010 Ford police interceptors, as recommended by Police Chief Tim Young. Quirk, which was the sole bidder, also offered a bid for the 2011 model, which could be ordered for $23,949 a piece. But those would not be available until October or November, Young said.

In addition to paying for the two new cruisers, funds in the $52,000 approved last month at Town Meeting for the vehicle replacements will go toward vehicle equipment.

Young said the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office has done away with its emergency response team and has a Ford ambulance used for that purpose that would cost Topsham nothing to obtain. He said the 1993 vehicle, which has 120,000 miles, could be used as a mobile command post in major events.

Several selectmen, while supporting the acquisition, voiced concern that the town might years from now be faced with replacing the vehicle.

Selectman Jim Trusiani said he favored getting the vehicle and using it, “and if it runs its life, then I think it goes away.”

The board also approved Harry C. Crooker and Sons’ low bid of $172,020 for paving on Foreside Road, as recommended by Public Works Director Rob Pontau. Crooker narrowly edged out R.C. and Sons Paving, which bid nearly $175,000, and it also outbid Pike Industries’ $242,750 offer.

Pontau said a notice to proceed with the paving will be given July 1, and that the project will be complete by Aug. 1.
