6/2 at 3:58 p.m. Officer Mark Teceno responded to a Topsham resident’s report that she had been the victim of a phone scam. The woman said she received a phone call from a man who said he was with Publishers Direct Sweepstakes and told her she had won $285,000 but had to wire $2,300 in order to receive the money. According to police, the woman eventually wired a total of $15,000.
The woman said she also got a call from a supposed representative of Bank of America on June 2 who said he knew she had been scammed and wanted to help her her her money back. She declined. The resident notified police who in turn notified federal authorities.
