8/5 at 1:30 a.m. Officer Donald Cowles responded to a report on Lower Main Street of a man along the Androscoggin River threatening suicide. The man started swimming upstream toward a dam when Cowles approached, causing the officer to lose visual contact. Other officers responded, along with Topsham and Brunswick emergency and Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office personnel, who launched boats and located the man, who was trying to conceal himself in rocks in front of the dam. The man was combative and was restrained in a water rescue stretcher so he could be taken back to the boat, and transported to Midcoast Hospital in Brunswick.
