TOPSHAM — A motor vehicle crash on U.S. Route 196 Wednesday afternoon left one person dead and two others injured, according to police.

Police, fire and rescue personnel responded to the crash in the area of West Merrill Road at 3:41 p.m. They said a 2002 GMC Envoy driven by Justin Cyr, 32, of Lewiston, was headed west on U.S. Route 196 when it crossed the center line, sideswiping an eastbound tractor-trailer truck driven by Dana Moore, 55, of Freeport.

Cyr’s vehicle kept moving in the eastbound lane, and collided head-on with a 2007 Honda Civic driven by Barbara Brusila, 61, of Warren. Brusila’s passenger, Jean Brusila, 90, also of Warren, was pronounced dead on the scene.

Cyr was taken to Midcoast Hospital in Brunswick, and Barbara Brusila was transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland, both with non-life-threatening injuries. U.S. Route 196 was closed for about five hours.

Topsham police, assisted by the Maine State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit, are investigating the crash, which Bath and Brunswick police are reconstructing.
