SOUTH PORTLAND — Thomas J. Connolly, 95, died Oct. 24 at the Maine Veterans’ Home in Scarborough.
He was born on May 11, 1914, in Portland, a son of Patrick and Margaret (Crowley) Connolly. In 1932 he graduated from Cheverus High School.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in Europe and fought in the Battle of the Rhineland.
After the war, he moved in with his close friends John “Skip” and Elizabeth Conley, and lived with them for nearly 60 years.
He worked for Portland Distributors and later for the Portland Schools, retiring as a food service manager in 1977.
An avid golf player, he also worked part-time at the Riverside Golf Course for over 20 years. He was a member of the American Legion Waterville/Daniel E. Lambert Post 178, and a communicant of Holy Cross Church.
He was predeceased by his brother Martin Connolly, his closest friends, Skip and Elizabeth Conley and their son, John “Jackie” Conley, III.
Survivors include Skip and Elizabeth Conley’s seven children, Richard Conley of Saco, Nancy Murdoch of Windham, Kenneth Conley and Edward Conley, both of South Portland, Judith Conley of Windham, Patricia Beaudreau of Glastonbury, Conn., and James Conley of Portland.
Memorial services were held earlier this week.
Arrangements are by Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland.
