PORTLAND — Thomas Arthur Herbert Jr., 86, died July 3.

He was born in Portland on April 3, 1923, a son of Thomas A. and Eleanor M. (Alexander) Herbert Sr.

In 1941, he graduated from Portland High School. He later attended Morehead State Teachers College in Morehead, Ky.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Twiggs and the U.S.S. Wilkes-Barre as an electrician’s mate, second class, in the Pacific theatre.

While in the Navy, he met his wife of 60 years, Sarah “Betty” Tritle. They were married in Philadelphia on July 25, 1944.

After serving in the Navy, he returned to Portland and worked as a longshoreman. Later on, he joined the Portland Fire Department as the superintendent of the signal division, retiring in 1973 after 26 years of service.

Family and friends will remember his captive storytelling. He enjoyed traveling the eastern seaboard in the summer with his beloved wife, Betty, and their children and grandchildren. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren affectionately called him “Bampy” and he was a constant support at their sporting events.

He was predeceased by his wife Betty in 2005.

Surviving are his four children, Beverly Moran and her husband, Dennis of Portland, Mary Lou Trowbridge and her husband, Richard Sr., of Ledyard, Conn., Thomas A. Herbert III and his wife, Sheila of Nashua, N.H., and Gloria Moran and her husband, David of South Portland; 10 grandchildren, Donna Tibbetts and her husband, John, Patrick Herbert, Sherri Roberts and her husband, Kevin, Kerry Moran, David Moran and his wife Susan, Richard Trowbridge Jr., and his wife, Stephanie, Laurie Outsa, Kevin Moran, Brendan Herbert, and Chelsey Trowbridge; and 10 great-grandchildren, Kayla, John and Logan Tibbetts, Aidan and Grace Roberts, Richard III, Jack, and Sarah Trowbridge, Carter Outsa and Caitlin Pickett; two sisters, Agnes Goode of Weston, Mass., and Mary Norton of Westbrook and two brothers, Francis Herbert of Port Charlotte, Fla., and George Herbert of Portland; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services were held earlier this week.
