FREEPORT — Theodore R. “Ted” Ray Jr., 75, died July 12 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice after years of failing health.

He was born on July 28, 1933, in New Gloucester, a son of Louise (Webber) and Theodore R. Ray Sr.

After graduating from high school in 1952, he served in the U.S. Army for four years until he was discharged.

In 1956, he met and married Alice Hanscome of North Yarmouth.

He worked at Central Maine Power until his retirement 16 years ago.

His hobbies included reading history, watching television, golfing and bowling. He was also a lifetime fan of the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots.

He was a quiet man by nature, kind and easygoing. His wife and family were a source of joy for him, and he took immense pleasure in being with them.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Alice Ray of Freeport; three children, Cindy Ray of Lisbon Falls, Rhonda Merrill and her husband Jeffrey of Lewiston, and Theodore Ray and his wife Melissa of Freeport; eight grandchildren, John, Jason, and Melinda Libby, Heather and Jennifer Merrill, Ashley St. Amand, Hannah and Caleb Ray; eight great-grandchildren; his sisters, Connie Bilter of North Carolina, Betty Jordan and her husband Wayne; his brothers, Robert Ray and his wife Martha, Carroll Ray and his wife Heidi, all of New Gloucester, and Allan Ray and his wife Janet of Newcastle; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, July 17, at the Pownal Congregational Church, 461 Elmwood Road, Pownal.
