The high school ski season came to an end last week at far-flung venues across the state.
Cheverus competed in the Class A Alpine meet at Sunday River. The Stags were fourth as a team on the girls’ side and placed ninth in boys’ action. The boys’ team also produced a double state champion.
Waynflete has dominated Class C Nordic skiing in recent years, but the Flyers took a step back this winter.
Waynflete’s girls came in fifth, while the boys were seventh at Black Mountain.
SUBHEAD-Class A
The Cheverus girls got things started Monday with the giant slalom. The Stags had 91 points to finish fifth. Margaret Corrigan led the way with a second-place finish (1 minute, 18.48 seconds). Emily Machesney was 18th (1:30.07). Katherine Drake finished 22nd (1:33.53) and Madeline Woods was 49th (1:44.44).
Deering and Portland didn’t score as a team.
Deering’s Anna Chandler was 13th in 1:27.30. Portland’s Geneva Morley placed 69th (1:54.08). Teammates Danielle Holt and Zoe Lee did not score.
At the slalom Wednesday, Cheverus moved up to third with 92 points, giving the Stags a combined total of 183 points, which left them fourth behind Mt. Blue, Oxford Hills and Edward Little.
Machesney moved up to fifth in the slalom (1:26.02). Corrigan was 16th (1:34.71), Drake was 35th (2:01.56) and Anya McCarthy placed 36th (2:01.81).
Deering’s Chandler came in 29th (1:55.49). Portland’s Lee came in 38th (2:04.99).
On the boys’ side, Cheverus had 163 points in the GS to place ninth. Alexander Markellos did steal the show, however, placing first in 1 minute, 9.99 seconds. Ian Connors (24th, 1:20.96), Sean Haith (65th, 1:35.24), and Spencer Reynolds (74th, 1:40.45) also scored.
Portland managed 270 points. The Bulldogs were paced by Charlie Marr (47th, 1:29.22). Andy Holt (63rd, 1:34.11), Christian Findlay (78th, 1:46.75) and Dillon Reno (85th, 1:52.01) also scored.
In the slalom, Cheverus had 122 points and was sixth. The Stags’ combined total of 285 points left them ninth. Edward Little was first with 75.
Markellos took that race as well (1:02.12). Connors moved to 22nd (1:18.78), Reynolds was 46th (1:39.33) and Ryan Hoffman came in 55th (1:50.21).
Portland’s Marr placed 32nd (1:25.78).
SUBHEAD-Class C
Waynflete started with the freestyle Thursday. The boys came in seventh with 114 points. Fort Kent was first with 36. The Flyers were led by standout Nate Niles, who was second to Fort Kent’s Nicholas Michaud in 14 minutes, 49.9 seconds. Otis Wortley placed sixth (15:45.0). Max Sobel (51st, 19:56.4) and Myoung Kim (65th, 29:07,8) also scored.
The girls had 88 points and tied Winthrop for fifth. Fort Kent was first with 13 points. Individually, Ellie Cole led the way with a 16th-place showing (21:14.6). Chloe Rowse came in 20th (22:08.4). Emma Longcope was right behind in 21st (23:47.7).
At the classic race Saturday, the Waynflete boys came in sixth with 108 points. Fort Kent was again first with 30. Niles was once again runner-up to Michaud in 15:45.2. Wortley moved up to fifth (16:42.3). Sobel placed 48th (20:53.9) and Eli Sobel was 53rd (21:42.3).
The Flyers wound up with 222 points total and finished seventh. Fort Kent was the Class C Nordic state champion with 66 points.
In the girls’ classic, Waynflete had 88 points and was fifth. Fort Kent won with 16. The Flyers featured a 14th-place finish from Cole (21:45.7), a 17th-place showing from Longcope (22:36.2), and a 23rd-place finish from Rowse (24:14.2).
Waynflete had 76 points total and was fifth as a team. Fort Kent won with 29.
