Dragons down Messalonskee in prelim, but have no answer for Waterville
The hockey season came to a close in the Midcoast Tuesday night after Brunswick was eliminated 6-0 by Waterville in the Eastern Class A quarterfinals.
The Dragons, 9-9 in the regular season, and ranked eighth for the playoffs, squeaked past No. 9 Messalonskee in a preliminary round game Saturday. The Dragons had edged the Eagles 3-2 in overtime on Jan. 26 and had to scratch and claw in the rematch before advancing 4-3.
That sent Brunswick to top-ranked Waterville. The Dragons fell 4-2 at home to the Purple Panthers Dec. 20 and lost 4-1 in Waterville Feb. 10.
Tuesday, the Dragons were outshot 42-8, but were right in it after a scoreless first period. Brunswick then fell behind 3-0 after two periods and gave up three more goals in the third as its season came to a close at 10-10.
