Swimming and track crowned their state champions earlier this week and local schools were right in the hunt for top honors.
At the Class A boys’ track meet Monday, Brunswick posted 48 points, but finished second by eight points to Scarborough. Mt. Ararat came in 13th with 14 points.
In the girls’ championships, won by Scarborough with 77 points, Brunswick placed third with 54 and Mt. Ararat was seventh with 30.
The girls’ swimming and diving state meet was held Monday at Bowdoin College in Brunswick. Morse had 243 points, but was second to Cape Elizabeth (306). Mt. Ararat came in 19th with 33 points. Brunswick was 22nd with 21 points.
The boys had their turn Tuesday at Bowdoin. Bangor won the title with 315 points. Brunswick finished ninth with 116 points, Morse (97) was 10th and Mt. Ararat (44) placed 16th.
The skiing state championships were ongoing when this issue went to press. We’ll recap those results in next week’s issue.
SUBHEAD-Track
Both Brunswick track teams culminated their superb seasons in style Monday. The boys got a victory from Will Geoghegan in the two-mile (9 minutes, 52.49 seconds). Geoghegan was also third in the mile (4:36.97). Liam Cassidy came in third in the two-mile (10:00.48) and placed fourth in the mile (4:38.56). Mike Slovenski was fourth in the pole vault (13 feet). Kenzell Crawford finished fourth in the long jump (19-9.5) and was sixth in the 55 hurdles (8.19 seconds). Both Dragons relay teams came in third.
For Mt. Ararat, Tim Bickford finished runner-up in the triple jump (42-5.25) and third in the long jump (20-11.5).
The Brunswick girls were led by Kristin Slotnick, who won the 55 hurdles (7.27), the 55 (7.27), and the 400 (58.80). Emily Hartzell finished first in the pole vault (9-0) and was sixth in the triple jump (33-8.75).
Kyia Jensen placed third in the 800 (2:25.83). Jackie Kelley finished seventh in the 55 hurdles (7.68) and seventh in the 55 (7.68). Kathleen McMahon was seventh in the two-mile (12:21.71). The Dragons were fourth in the 3,200 relay.
Mt. Ararat’s Colby Gail won the high jump (5-5). Randi London was third in the shot put (34-3.5). The Eagles were second in the 3,200 relay and third in the 800 relay.
SUBHEAD-Swimming
At the Class A girls’ swimming and diving meet, Morse was second in the 200 free relay, third in the medley relay and fifth in the 400 free relay.
The Shipbuilders were led individually by Emily Buczkowski, who came in second in the 100 free (56.05) and the 100 backstroke (1:02.94), and Rebecca Bonnett, who was runner-up in the 100 butterfly (1 minute, 2.30 seconds) and third in the 200 individual medley (2:18.58).
Brunswick was paced by diver Kayla Purinton, who was second with a score of 295.60. Mt. Ararat’s Kristi Snipe finished seventh (240.15).
Tuesday, at the boys’ meet, Morse’s James Wells set a new state record in the 100 fly (50.06) and did the same in the backstroke (49.88). Brunswick’s Phillip Jacques took the IM (1:58.48) and the 100 breaststroke (1:02.39).
Mt. Ararat was paced by Peter Burtt, who was seventh in the 500 free (5:32.14). Tyler Cota was eighth in diving (213.45).
