SOUTH PORTLAND — An employee of Cumberland Farms on Cottage Road arrived at work early on March 3 to find the front door shattered and a small amount of cash and cigarettes stolen from the store.

The employee called the police, who followed bicycle tracks from the scene to the area of Broadway and Harriet Street. Following that and other leads, officers arrested Paul Hooper, 31, of South Portland, on a charge of Class C burglary. Allegedly stolen merchandise was recovered from Hooper.

Hooper was sent to Cumberland County Jail on $10,000 bail. He was arraigned March 5 faces up to five years in jail and a fine up to $5,000.

Hooper is on probation after serving 2 1/2 years in prison for assaulting a Portland police officer.
