FREEPORT — Susan Diane “Sue” Fernald, 49, died Dec. 24 after eight years of courageously battling cancer.
She was born in Portland on Jan. 27, 1959, the daughter of Joyce (Stetson) and Keith Giddinge. She graduated from Freeport High School in 1977.
She worked as a waitress, a certified nurse assistant and most recently in customer service at Wal-Mart.
For her, life was all about helping people. She was a Girl Scout leader and was active in various school functions as her children grew.
She enjoyed reading, bowling, camping, window shopping or just going for drives and trips.
She will be remembered for her smile that showed her strength of spirit throughout her ordeals and as a very supportive mother to her children. Most of all she will be remembered for the love she had for her grandson Tommy.
She is survived by her husband of 26 years, Richard Fernald of Freeport; her daughter, Amanda Fernald of Freeport, and her son, Ryan Fernald of Freeport; her grandson, Tommy Dixon of Freeport; her mother, Joyce Giddinge of Freeport; and her father, Keith Giddinge and his wife Jeanne of Grand Isle.
Visiting hours will be held Jan. 2 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist Funeral Home, One Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth.
A memorial service will be held Jan. 3 at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Freeport, 185 Main St., Freeport, with the Rev. Sandy Williams officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall. Burial will be in the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Augusta at a later date.
