A new boat hit the waters of Casco Bay on June 1, after being christened by Spanish immigrant Jacobo Rodriguez at the East End boat launch in Portland. With expertise and support from the Compass Project, Rodriquez and other English Language Learners from South Portland High School built the Echo Bay Dory Skiff during the winter. The boat will be sold and the money donated to relief efforts in Haiti, the home country of some of the students.
South Portland High School student Gerardo Anya, from Mexico, gives a thumbs up as he settles in for the maiden voyage of the boat built by his class. International students in the English Language Learners program built the Echo Bay Dory Skiff over the winter as part of the Compass Project, which has been helping students in the greater Portland overcome academic and social challenges since 2002.
