PORTLAND — Police will issue a summons to a 10-year-old boy who allegedly brought an unloaded handgun into Riverton Elementary School this morning.

Officers responded to Riverton at 8:30 a.m. after another student reported seeing a gun to a teacher. The school was briefly locked down, but classes resumed around 10 a.m.

The School Department said the weapon was confiscated and police and school officials believe no one was placed at risk.

The same student was the subject of an investigation two weeks ago, when it was believed he had brought an unloaded gun to school. The investigation was dropped after police interviewed the boy and his parents.

An investigation is continuing into how the boy obtained the gun, police said.

The school at 1600 Forest Ave. has students in kindergarten through fifth-grade. There were 450 students in 2011.
