CUMBERLAND — Steven M. Wescott, 52, died March 31.

He was the son of Bruce Wescott and Sandra Perry Wescott. He was born and raised in the East Deering neighborhood of Portland before moving to Cumberland Center at 17. He graduated from Greely High School in 1980. Wescott moved to California where he learned his lifelong trade as a skilled carpenter. He was self-employed and tackled jobs both large and small. He worked on construction projects in Florida, Nantucket, New Hampshire and Maine.

In addition to carpentry, he spent many years using his swimming skills by working as a lifeguard at Old Orchard Beach. He was proud of his post at the Pier.

Wescott was a gifted athlete. Waterskiing, skateboarding and dirt bikes were his passion. He had many close friends in Maine and throughout New England. He was close to the children of his friends, who knew him as Uncle Steve. He was a kid at heart and would always go out of his way to play with the kids.

Wescott was a dad and grandfather. His pride and joy was his daughter, Shelley and her family.

He is survived by his mother, Sandra Wescott, of Cumberland; daughter, Shelley Sullivan and husband, Brendan, and their children, Kaelyn and Colin; and brother, Bobby Wescott and his children, Cameron, Luke and Hannah Wescott.

Visitation was held April 3 at Lindquist Funeral Home, Yarmouth. A memorial service was held at Lindquist Funeral Home April 4, with Rev. John Twitchell officiating.
