SOUTH PORTLAND — Steven M. Onos, 47, of South Portland, died unexpectedly Sunday.

Onos had served six years on the South Portland School Board, including a term as chairman.

Born June 14, 1965, in Lynn, Mass., to Gerard and Diane Onos, he was a graduate of South Portland High School and the University of Southern Maine.

Over the years, Onos worked in management positions at GMAC, Key Bank, TD Bank, JPMorgan Chase and Northeast Credit Union. He was most recently vice president of lending at Town & Country Federal Credit Union. Onos was very happy with his work and his co-workers, and was thrilled to be back working so close to home so he could have more time to spend with his family.

Onos met his wife, Connie Depierro, when they were in high school. They dated throughout college and were married in 1989 at Spurwink Church in Cape Elizabeth. Together they raised three children, Izaak, Abigail and Sydney.

Onos loved attending concerts, swim meets, track meets, and any other activity in which his family took part. He would be the first one to drop everything to help out a friend or family member who needed a hand.

Onos was also a tinkerer and craftsman like his grandfather. He could do just about any kind of trade work – electrical, plumbing, carpentry. Over the years, he took pride in building things, including a boat and stand-up paddleboards. Most recently, he had designed and was building his garage and workshop.

Onos is survived by his wife of 23 years, Connie DiPierro Onos of South Portland; his children, Izaak, Abigail and Sydney; his father, Gerard Onos; his brother, Michael, and his fiancé, LuAnn, of Bridgewater, Mass.; his brother, David, of South Portland; his sister, Kathy, and her husband, Ed DiPhilippo, of South Portland; his mother-in-law, Thelma DiPierro, of South Portland; his brothers- and sisters-in law, Mark DiPierro of Westport Island, John and Patricia DiPierro of East Granby, Conn., Coralie and Gregory Curran of South Portland, Charles and Colleen DiPierro of South Portland, Philip DiPierro of Scarborough, and David and Jillian DiPierro of San Diego; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by his mother, Diane Onos.

He will be greatly missed by all.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the First Congregational Church, 301 Cottage Road, South Portland. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to South Portland High School, Attn: Steve Onos Scholarship Fund, 637 Highland Ave., South Portland, ME 04106.
