Jennifer Corthell and Katelyn Ladd add a new mulch cover to an old tree in Portland’s Longfellow Park on Friday, April 18, as part of the second annual park cleanup, organized by Carol Schiller, president of the University Neighborhood Organization. Corthell lives across from the park on Longfellow Street, and Ladd was one of about six USM students who pitched in ahead of Tuesday’s annual arrival of Earth Day. Staff from the city Public Services Department and Councilor Ed Suslovic also helped out. The park, at the intersection of Longfellow, Oakdale and Noyes streets, will also be the site of a May 3 block party from noon-3 p.m.
