FALMOUTH — A sprinkler system that put out a small closet fire probably saved a Route 1 commercial building from extensive damage, Fire Chief Howard Rice Jr. said Monday.
Firefighters responded to the alarm at 400 U.S. Route 1 at about 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 18, and found water pooled on the floor after opening a closet door in the basement, Rice said.
Crews determined a small fire had broken out in the closet, but was quickly extinguished by the sprinkler system, the chief said. The origin of the fire was believed to be a hot water furnace.
“The sprinkler did its job,” Rice said. “Had there not been a sprinkler there, the damage would have been much, much greater.”
One person was in the building at the time of the fire and was able to leave without incident. The building is home to several tenants, including Anodyne Solutions.
