South Portland’s boys’ lacrosse team celebrates a goal during last week’s 13-12 home win over Yarmouth.

It hasn’t even begun to feel like spring, yet the 2019 spring sports season is nearly halfway complete.

Local athletes have become adept at dodging raindrops and making the most of their opportunities on the diamond, field, track and courts. 

Here’s a glimpse at the week that was:

Baseball

Both Scarborough and South Portland’s baseball teams opened the season on a roll.

The Red Storm won last week at home over Windham (5-4, in nine-innings) and at Noble (7-1) to improve to 4-0. Against the Eagles, Nick Thompson had two hits and earned the win in relief and Nic Frink, T.J. Liponis and Peter O’Brien all had a pair of hits. In the win over the Knights, Jack Clark earned the victory and O’Brien and Thompson both drove in a pair of runs. After hosting Deering Tuesday and Sanford Wednesday, Scarborough went to Cheverus Thursday (see theforecaster.net for game story), welcomes Biddeford Monday and plays at Marshwood Thursday of next week.

South Portland was also 4-0 following a 10-0, five-inning home win over Massabesic Saturday. Tyler Small singled, doubled and drove in four runs, Caden Horton and Anthony Poole also had a pair of hits and Gus Lappin hit an RBI triple. The Red Riots hosted Falmouth Monday, went to defending Class A South champion Gorham Tuesday, hosted Thornton Academy Thursday, welcome Portland Saturday and play at Kennebunk Tuesday of next week.

Cape Elizabeth fell to 0-4 last Wednesday with a 7-2 loss at York. After playing a doubleheader Monday at Freeport and hosting Yarmouth Wednesday, the Capers go to Wells Friday, host York Monday, then visit Poland Wednesday of next week.

Softball

Scarborough’s two-time defending Class A champion softball team opened the season 6-0 and entered Tuesday’s home game versus Cheverus on a 46-game win streak and a 95-game regular season win streak. Last week, the Red Storm downed visiting Kennebunk (17-2, in five-innings), then won at Noble, 6-0. Caitlin Noiles had three hits, including a home run, in the win over the Rams. Bella Dickinson added three hits, Mia Kelley earned the victory and had two hits and four RBI and Courtney Brochu also finished with a pair of hits. Against the Knights, Dickinson threw a two-hit, 16-strikeout gem. A.J. Swett had two hits, scored two runs and drove in another. Scarborough hosted Cheverus Tuesday, went to Sanford Wednesday, welcomed Portland Thursday, plays host to South Portland Monday, then welcomes Falmouth in a makeup game Thursday of next week.

South Portland took a 3-2 mark into Monday’s home game versus Marshwood. Last Wednesday, the host Red Riots defeated Gorham, 12-6. Cortney Luce and Grace Rende each had three hits. South Portland was home with Deering Tuesday, went to Portland for a makeup game Wednesday, welcomes Noble Friday, plays at Scarborough Monday and hosts Sanford Wednesday of next week.

Cape Elizabeth was 3-1 entering its doubleheader at Freeport Monday. Last week, the Capers won, 10-2, at York, behind Jessie Robicheaw’s effort at the plate (three hits) and on the mound (six strikeouts) and Anna Cornell’s two-run double. After hosting Yarmouth Wednesday, the Capers go to Wells Friday, host York Monday, then visit Poland Wednesday of next week.

Boys’ lacrosse

Cape Elizabeth and South Portland’s boys’ lacrosse teams remained undefeated at press time.

The Capers improved to 6-0 Friday with a 9-4 home win over Falmouth. Colin Campbell, Archie McEvoy and Phil Tarling all had two goals and Cape Elizabeth’s defense held the Yachtsmen’s high-powered attack in check.

“I think it’s going great,” Campbell said. “I love this team. I think we all play well and do our part.”

“This is definitely a confidence-booster,” defenseman Andrew Carroll said. “We’re going to keep playing our game and have fun with it.”

“The guys feel pretty confident, but they understand that a couple things here and there and we’d be looking at a different start to the season,” added Capers coach Ben Raymond. “We do know when games are tight, we can play well.”

Cape Elizabeth went to Greely Tuesday and hosts York Tuesday of next week.

South Portland, meanwhile, improved to 3-0 Friday with a dramatic 13-12 home win over Yarmouth. Cooper Mehlhorn had four goals and Alex Stevens added three.

“It’s a big win for us,” said Red Riots coach Tom Fiorini. “We got the stops when we needed to and made some nice offensive plays.”

South Portland home against Falmouth Wednesday,  play at Kennebunk Friday and visit Sanford Wednesday of next week.

Scarborough fell to 2-4 Friday after a 12-11 home loss to defending Class B champion Brunswick. Andrew Granzier and Jared Quintiliani each had four goals in defeat. The Red Storm went to defending Class A champion Thornton Academy Wednesday and play host to Gorham Tuesday of next week.

Girls’ lacrosse

Cape Elizabeth’s defending Class B state champion girls’ lacrosse team improved to 3-1 last Thursday with a 16-5 home win over Messalonskee. After Wednesday’s state final rematch at Yarmouth, the Capers visit Thornton Academy Saturday and host Waynflete Thursday of next week.

South Portland evened its record at 2-2 Saturday with a 15-3 victory at Mt. Ararat. Jena Leckie scored five times.

“Today, it was nice to be out on a field, and we tried some things,” Red Riots coach Leslie Dyer said. “We are young and don’t have a lot of game experience. They made it click today, which was great to see.”

South Portland was at defending Class A South champion Massabesic for a playoff rematch Wednesday and hosts Bonny Eagle Tuesday of next week.

Scarborough dropped to 0-3 Saturday after a 6-4 loss at Waynflete. Erin Stolz had two goals in defeat. The Red Storm were at defending Class A champion Falmouth Wednesday, travel to Brunswick Friday, then host Massabesic Tuesday of next week.

Outdoor track

Cape Elizabeth’s outdoor track team competed in a five-team meet last Friday at Gray-New Gloucester. The boys and girls both came in first.

The SMAA season continued Monday, when Scarborough hosted Deering, Marshwood and Westbrook and Tuesday, when South Portland competed at Noble.

Tennis

Cape Elizabeth’s defending Class B South girls’ tennis team was 2-1 heading into Monday’s home match versus Waynflete. The Capers had two matches postponed by rain last week.

The Cape Elizabeth boys dropped their first three matches, but last Wednesday, improved to 1-3 with a 5-0 win at York. The Capers were at 11-time Class C champion Waynflete Monday.

Scarborough’s girls improved to 2-1 last week after a weather-shortened 3-0 win at Bonny Eagle. 

The Scarborough boys fell to 1-3 after a 5-0 home loss to Deering Friday. 

South Portland’s boys took a 1-2 mark into Monday’s home match versus Westbrook. A 4-1 loss at Deering last Wednesday was the Red Riots’ most recent action.

South Portland’s girls took an 0-2 mark into Monday’s match at Westbrook.
