The spring sports season has just over three weeks remaining and most local teams are near the end of their regular schedules.

Tennis

The tennis singles tournament is underway. Defending girls’ champion Maisie Silverman of Brunswick is the No. 1 seed and the favorite. On the boys’ side, Morse’s Sam Leeman is ranked fifth.

The first and second rounds are Saturday at Lewiston High School. The round of 16 and quarterfinals are Monday at Bates College in Lewiston and the semifinals and and finals are May 29, also at Bates.

The team tournament starts Tuesday of next week with the preliminary round.

Brunswick’s boys and girls both earned top seeds in Eastern A with 12-0 records. Mt. Ararat’s girls were fifth (with the final Heal Points standings yet to come out) in Eastern A and will take part in the playoffs. The Eagles boys’ team fell short at 2-10. Morse’s girls were 5-6 at press time and should be in the postseason. The Shipbuilders boys were clinging to the final Western B playoff spot at press time.

The quarterfinals are May 30 and semifinals June 1. Each of those rounds will feature the higher seeded team as host. The regional finals are June 5, at Bates. The state championship matches are June 8, at the University of Maine in Orono.

Baseball

Morse’s baseball team was third behind Greely and defending Class B state champion Falmouth in the Western B Heals at press time. The Shipbuilders improved to 10-3 last week with an 8-5 home win over Mt. View and a 17-8 victory at Leavitt. Morse was home with Belfast Wednesday, plays at Camden Hills Friday and closes the regular season at home with Nokomis Tuesday.

In Eastern A, Mt. Ararat was eighth at 3-10 after a 9-1 home loss to Lewiston and a 10-0 home setback to Bangor. The Eagles were at Cony Thursday, play host to Brunswick Friday and close at Mt. Blue Tuesday.

Brunswick was 3-10 and 10th (only nine teams in Eastern A make the playoffs) at press time after a 7-3 loss at Edward Little and a 6-5 setback at Skowhegan. The Dragons were home with Erskine Tuesday and played at Lewiston Wednesday before closing the year with a visit to Mt. Ararat Friday.

Softball

Mt. Ararat’s softball team began the week 4-9 and 10th in the Eastern A standings (the top nine teams make the playoffs) after an 8-0 loss at Erskine, a 6-5 home win over Lewiston and a 20-9 home loss to Bangor last week. The Eagles were at Cony Thursday, play host to Brunswick Friday and close at Mt. Blue Tuesday.

Brunswick dropped to 0-13 and 14th in the region after losses to visiting state champion Cony (14-0), host Edward Little (11-1) and host Skowhegan (17-0). The Dragons were home with Erskine Tuesday and played at Lewiston Wednesday before closing the year with a visit to Mt. Ararat Friday.

In Western B, Morse sat 2-11 and 17th (only 12 teams make the postseason) after a 13-1 loss at Oceanside, a 14-2 home win over Mt. View and a 12-8 setback at Leavitt last week. The Shipbuilders were home with Belfast Wednesday, play at Camden Hills Friday and close the regular season at home with Nokomis Tuesday.

Boys’ lacrosse

Brunswick’s boys’ lacrosse team still leads the Eastern A Heals with a 9-1 record. The Dragons suffered their first loss last Wednesday, 9-8, at Lewiston, but bounced back Friday with a 13-7 triumph at Messalonskee. After hosting Mt. Ararat Wednesday, Brunswick closes at St. Dom’s Tuesday.

Mt. Ararat was up to third in Eastern A with a 7-2 mark following a 5-2 win at Cony lat Wednesday. The Eagles went to Brunswick Wednesday, host Oxford Hills Friday and welcome Lewiston Wednesday of next week.

In Eastern B, Morse was 6-3 and fifth in the Heals at press time after Friday’s 12-9 home loss to top-ranked Gardiner. The Shipbuilders were at Camden Hills Wednesday, visit Cony Friday and close play host to Lincoln Wednesday of next week.

Girls’ lacrosse

On the girls’ side, Morse clings to the fifth and final Eastern B playoff spot with a 5-4 record after falling at Mt. Ararat (10-6) and beating visiting Lincoln Academy (21-5) and Brunswick (13-7). After hosting Edward Little Tuesday and going to Camden Hills Thursday, the Shipbuilders close at Messalonskee Tuesday of next week.

In Eastern A, Mt. Ararat was sixth at 5-5 at press time. The Eagles defeated visiting Morse, 10-6, then lost, 10-8 to visiting Lewiston and 10-9 (in overtime) to visiting Brunswick. The Eagles were home with Lincoln Thursday and close at Cony Tuesday.

Brunswick held the eighth and final playoff spot at press time with a record of 3-7 following a 12-9 home loss to Lewiston, a 10-9 overtime win at Mt. Ararat and a 13-7 setback at Morse. The Dragons were home with Cony Tuesday and closed at Messalonskee Thursday.

Track

The Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference outdoor track championship meet is Saturday in Bath.

The state championships are the following Saturday, June 1.
