The 2010 spring sports season is now underway for virtually every local team and in just a few short days, there has already been a ton of drama. Here’s a glimpse:

Baseball

Brunswick’s baseball team is 1-2 in the early going. The Dragons sandwiched losses to Cony (8-2) and Lewiston (5-4) around a 6-3 victory at Edward Little. Brunswick was home with Morse Wednesday, hosts Mt. Ararat Friday and plays at Oxford Hills Monday.

Mt. Ararat split its first two games, defeating host Morse, 17-4, then losing, 11-0 (in six innings), at home to Cony. The Eagles hosted Edward Little Wednesday, go to Brunswick Friday and visit Lewiston Monday.

Morse suffered a 17-4 setback to Mt. Ararat in its opener, but played much better in its second outing, giving talented Cony a scare before falling, 2-0. The Shipbuilders were at Brunswick Wednesday, host Oxford Hills Friday and go to Edward Little Monday.

Softball

Turning to softball, Brunswick is 1-1, losing 17-1 at Edward Little before bouncing back with a 13-2 win at Lewiston Monday. The Dragons hosted Morse Wednesday, welcome Mt. Ararat Friday and play at Oxford Hills Monday.

Mt. Ararat is also 1-1 in the early going. The Eagles opened with a 13-5 victory at Morse, then lost, 2-1, to visiting Cony on Monday. Mt. Ararat hosted Edward Little Wednesday, visits Brunswick Friday and plays at Lewiston Monday.

Morse is seeking its first win. The Shipbuilders opened with a 13-5 home loss to Mt. Ararat. They were at Brunswick Wednesday, welcome Oxford Hills Friday and play at Edward Little Monday.

Boys’ lacrosse

The defending Eastern A champion Brunswick boys’ lacrosse team began its season by defeating Mt. Ararat, 5-3. The Dragons are back in action Friday at home against Cony. Tuesday, Brunswick visits Edward Little.

Morse cruised in its first game, winning 17-4 at Camden. Monday, the Shipbuilders fell to 1-1 on the year after a 16-14 loss at St. Dom’s. Morse hosted Oak Hill Tuesday, plays at Gardiner Friday and visits Mountain Valley Tuesday.

Mt. Ararat is seeking its first win. The Eagles lost their first two contests, 5-3 to Brunswick and 8-4 to Lewiston. Tuesday, Mt. Ararat was at Mt. Blue. Friday, the Eagles host Edward Little and Tuesday they welcome Oxford Hills.

Girls’ lacrosse

On the girls’ side, all three local teams have started 2-0.

Two-time defending Class A champion Brunswick is up to its old tricks. The Dragons rolled over visiting Oxford Hills, 16-3, in the opener, then, on Monday, defeated visiting Cony, 15-7. Brunswick was at Messalonskee Thursday and welcomes Morse Monday.

Speaking of the Shipbuilders, they’ve defeated Camden (13-2) and Mountain Valley (16-9). Morse was at Gardiner Thursday and goes to Brunswick on Monday.

Mt. Ararat has downed Lewiston (17-2) and Messalonskee (13-5). The Eagles were at Cony Thursday and host Edward Little Monday.

Track

The outdoor track season got underway last week when Brunswick and Mt. Ararat joined Oxford Hills for a meet at Edward Little. The Dragons were second on the girls’ side and third in the boys’ meet. The Eagles came in runner-up in the boys’ competition and were third on the girls’ side.

Tennis

The 2010 tennis season began Monday. Brunswick faced powerhouse Lewiston and both the boys’ and girls’ squads gave the Blue Devils a scare before falling, 3-2. The Morse girls lost 4-1 to Oak Hill. Meo Pourreyron earned a win at first singles. Mt. Ararat lost 3-2 to Mt. Blue in both boys’ and girls’ competition.
