The middle of May is upon us and that means the 2010 spring sports season is roughly at its halfway point.

So far, so good has been the theme for local teams and there’s plenty more excitement ahead. Here’s a glimpse at where things stand:

Baseball

Brunswick’s baseball team took a 4-3 mark into the week. The Dragons defeated host Brewer, 6-3, last Friday, in their most recent contest. Brunswick was home with Hampden Tuesday, goes to Cony Friday and hosts Edward Little Monday.

Mt. Ararat evened its record at 4-4 with recent victories over Skowhegan (10-0 and Erskine (7-6). The Eagles host Morse Friday and welcome Erskine Monday.

Morse is still seeking its first victory. The Shipbuilders fell to 0-8 on the year after recent losses to Lewiston (8-4), Messalonskee (6-1) and Bangor (14-1). Morse goes to Mt. Ararat Friday and hosts Cony Monday.

Softball

On the softball side, Mt. Ararat entered the week with a 3-4 record. The Eagles were beaten, 12-0, at Skowhegan Friday and lost, 5-4, at Erskine Monday. Mt. Ararat hosted Oxford Hills Tuesday, welcomes Morse Friday and plays host to Erskine Monday.

Morse has won two of three and is now 3-5. The Shipbuilders sandwiched victories over Lewiston (9-8) and Bangor (3-2) around a loss at Messalonskee (19-1). Morse will play at Mt. Ararat Friday and welcomes Cony Monday.

Brunswick fell to 1-6 after a 14-0 loss at Brewer Friday. The Dragons hosted Hampden Academy Tuesday, visits Cony Friday and welcomes Edward Little Monday.

Boys’ lacrosse

While Brunswick’s boys’ lacrosse team was losing at Yarmouth last weekend (please see story), Mt. Ararat has now won four straight and is 4-2 on the year. The most recent victory was an 11-1 romp at Noble Saturday. After playing at Messalonskee Tuesady, The Eagles host Kennebunk in a crossover game Saturday and play at Cony Tuesday of next week.

Morse (4-1) was supposed to host Massabesic Saturday, but that game was postponed. The Shipbuilders hosted Lincoln Academy Tuesday, go to Deering Saturday and welcome St. Dom’s next Tuesday.

Girls’ lacrosse

While the undefeated Brunswick girls were enjoying a huge win at NYA (please see story), Mt. Ararat improved to 4-1 with a 16-2 home rout of Westbrook. The Eagles hosted Brunswick Wednesday, go to Western A power Scarborough Friday and visit Messalonskee Monday.

Morse (2-2) was supposed to host Thornton Academy in a crossover Saturday, but that game was rained out and moved to May 19. The Shipbuilders were home with Lincoln Wednesday, go to Westbrook Friday and visit Lincoln Monday.

Track

In track action last week, Brunswick and Mt. Ararat joined Waterville at Oxford Hills. The Dragons won the boys’ meet and were second in the girls’ competition. Both Eagles teams placed third.

Tennis

On the court, Brunswick’s boys took a 3-1 mark into play this week. The Dragons won, 4-1, at Mt. Ararat last Thursday. The Eagles evened their record at 3-3 Monday with a 4-1 win over Messalonskee. Morse downed visiting Oak Hill, 3-2, Monday.

On the girls’ side, Brunswick improved to 3-1 after last week’s 5-0 home win over Mt. Ararat, which dropped the Eagles to 2-3. Morse lost 4-1 to Oak Hill Monday and is 2-4 on the year.
