With a wonderful hint of summer in the air, the spring sports season is underway as every sport but track has begun in earnest.

Baseball

Brunswick’s baseball team is off to a sizzling start. The Dragons have defeated Oxford Hills (7-3), Leavitt (16-5, in five innings) and Mt. Ararat (5-3) to date. Brunswick hoped to make it four straight Wednesday (too late for print) when it went to Morse. Friday, the Dragons are home with Edward Little. Monday, they visit Cony.

Morse, conversely, is 0-3. The Shipbuilders have losses to Edward Little (11-1, in five innings), Cony (13-4) and Oxford Hills (5-0). Morse was home with Brunswick Wednesday, hosts Mt. Ararat Friday and goes to Lewiston Monday.

Mt. Ararat edged Oxford Hills 7-6 (in 15 innings) in its opener, but has since fallen to Cony (14-8) and Brunswick (5-3) and is 1-2 on the year. The Eagles looked to get back on the winning track Wednesday at home against Lewiston. Friday, they visit Morse and Monday they go to Leavitt.

On the girls’ side of the diamond, Mt. Ararat earned its first victory Monday, 8-1 over Brunswick. The Eagles had previously lost to Oxford Hills (9-2) and Cony (4-1). Mt. Ararat was home with Lewiston Wednesday (too late for print), plays at Morse Friday and visits Leavitt Monday.

Brunswick fell to 1-2 with the loss to the Eagles. The Dragons had lost to Oxford Hills and beat Leavitt in prior action. Brunswick was at Morse Wednesday, hosts Edward Little Friday and visits Cony Monday.

The Shipbuilders are 0-3 to date. After losing to Edward Little and Cony, they fell 8-1 at Oxford Hills Monday. Morse was home with Brunswick Wednesday, welcomes Mt. Ararat Friday and goes to Lewiston Monday.

Boys’ lacrosse

Local boys’ lacrosse teams are off to sizzling starts.

The defending Eastern A champion Brunswick Dragons won its first three contests by an aggregate 45-8 tally. The Dragons have defeated Edward Little (12-6), Lewiston (16-1) and Cony (17-1) to date. Brunswick goes to Mt. Ararat for a battle of unbeatens Friday and plays host to Messalonskee Tuesday.

Speaking of Mt. Ararat, it’s 4-0. The Eagles have enjoyed wins over Oxford Hills (17-2), Edward Little (10-8), Cony (12-3) and Lewiston (9-6). After its showdown against Brunswick, Mt. Ararat is off for a week before hosting Messalonskee May 8.

Morse beat Camden 14-3 and Mountain Valley 11-5 before falling 11-7 to Gardiner Monday. The Shipbuilders are home against Oak Hill Friday and host Lincoln Tuesday.

Girls’ lacrosse

On the girls’ side, defending Class A champion Brunswick is up to its old tricks. The Dragons have opened with decisive wins over Morse (14-4) and Lincoln (14-2). Brunswick was home against Oxford Hills Thursday (too late for print), then sits idle for a week before going to Messalonskee next Thursday.

Mt. Ararat is 1-1 so far. The Eagles opened with a 9-7 win over Oxford Hills, then lost 10-6 at Messalonskee. Mt. Ararat visits Camden Monday.

Morse lost its first two games, 14-4 to Brunswick and 14-13 to Oxford Hills. The Shipbuilders were at Lewiston Thursday.

Tennis

On the hardcourts, Brunswick’s boys are 1-1, losing 4-1 to Mt. Ararat and beating Gardiner by the same score. The Dragons girls’ team is also 1-1, losing 3-2 to Mt. Ararat and beating Gardiner 5-0.

Morse’s boys are 0-1, while its girls are 1-0.

Both Mt. Ararat teams are 1-0 and didn’t return to action until Wednesday (too late for print) against Edward Little.
