The stars of the spring sports season, circa 2013, were plentiful and many of the best and brightest from Forecaster Country were honored as all-stars and academic all-stars following the season.

Here’s a breakdown:

Baseball

Three of four local baseball teams made the playoffs and all four produced all-stars.

The Southwestern Maine Activities Association Cumberland County first team featured Cheverus outfielder Ryan Casale and utility Mitchell Powers, Deering utility Dominic Esposito-Martin and Portland pitcher Caleb Fraser and outfielder Tim Rovnak.

Cheverus’ Powers (second base) and Liam Fitzpatrick (outfield), Deering’s Ben Peterson (first base) and Portland’s Rovnak (outfield) made the All-Defensive team for Cumberland County.

The Cumberland County All-Rookie team featured Cheverus third baseman Jensen LaPoint, outfielder Charlie Mull and pitcher Nate Smith and Deering’s Esposito-Martin (catcher) and Mike Marzilli (outfield).

Cheverus’ Casale, Andrew Cloutier and Drew Ferrick and Portland’s Evan Caliendo, Marcus Caliendo, Ted Hamilton, Kyle Reichert, Rovnak, Mike Scala, Nate Smart and Chip Weber all qualified for the SMAA All-Academic team.

In the Western Maine Conference, the Class C first team included Waynflete’s Andrew Butler, Nik Morrill and Joey Schnier. Isaac Scher made the second team.

Butler was named the Class C Player of the Year.

Butler also played for the “West” team in the Senior All-Star Game and for Maine in the Maine vs. New Hampshire Senior All-Star Game.

Cheverus’ Powers and Chris Tinsman and Waynflete’s Morrill played in the Underclass Showcase.

Softball

The SMAA all-conference first-team included McAuley senior outfielder Molly Mack.

Cheverus’ Maeve Bell and Portland’s Leanne Reichert were second teamers.

Cheverus’ Katie Roy, McAuley’s Heather Chapman and Portland’s Gianna Gaudet were named honorable mention all-stars.

Cheverus’ Bell, Jamie Dulac, Kelsey Dulac and Roy, Deering’s Kianna DiBiase, McAuley’s Mack and Portland’s Reichert all qualified for the All-Academic team.

McAuley’s Mack played for the A/B West team in the Senior All-Star Game.

Cheverus’ Brittany Bell played for the West in the Junior Underclass Game.

Boys’ lacrosse

All four boys’ lacrosse teams made their mark this spring, with Cheverus making it to the Class A state final for the second straight year. As a result, city players were regulars on the SMAA and WMC all-star teams.

In the SMAA, the first team included Cheverus sophomore attack Thomas Lawson and junior middie Jack Sutton and Deering senior defenseman Sam Hornblower.

Cheverus junior defenseman Cody O’Brien and Deering senior utilityman Brett Harmon were named to the second team.

Cheverus junior goalie Jamie Biegel, Deering senior middie Billy Farrell and Portland junior goalie Ben Allen were honorable mention selections.

The All-Academic team included Cheverus’ Warren Murray and Mina Para and Portland’s Liam Brochu.

In the WMC, Waynflete senior attack Zander Majercik made the second team.

Majercik and Josh Espy qualified for the All-Academic team.

Senior All-Stars included Cheverus’ Para and Hilmar Smith, Deering’s Harmon and Waynflete’s Majercik. Majercik hd two goals and an for the “Abenaki” team in a 17-16 loss to “Penobscot.”

Cheverus’ Lawson and Sutton, Deering’s Hornblower and and Waynflete’s Harry Baker-Connick and Henry Cleaves took part in the inaugural Underclass All-Star Showcase. Deering’s Jon Dubois served as a coach. Baker-Connick (two goals) was part of an Atlantic Sportswear team that prevailed, 15-14, over LaxPros. Cleaves and Sutton both scored twice in defeat.

Waynflete’s Espy and Majercik qualified as Academic All-Americans.

Girls’ lacrosse

Cheverus and Waynflete took home girls’ lacrosse state titles this spring. The Stags and Flyers, along with other city teams, had players honored as all-stars.

In the WMC, Waynflete senior attack Sadie Cole, senior midfielder Martha Veroneau and senior defender Rhiannan Jackson were named to the first team.

Junior midfielder Ella Millard, senior defender Catherine Veroneau and senior goalie Katherine Torrey were named to the second team.

Jo Moore, Catherine Veroneau and Martha Veroneau all qualified for the WMC All-Academic team.

In the SMAA, Cheverus junior midfielders Elyse Caiazzo and Alex Logan and junior attack Meredith Willard made the first team.

McAuley midfielder Katherine Lake, Portland midfielder Lizzy Landry and Portland defender Gabi Cardona were named to the second team.

Cheverus’ Laura Peabody-Harrington and Nicole Pineau, Deering’s Molly KIlbride and Portland’s Drew Barry (who missed the second half of the season with a knee injury) were honorable mention selections.

The SMAA Rookie team included Cheverus’ Darby Rawcliffe, Deering’s Emily Krabbe, McAuley’s Elizabeth Poulin and Portland’s Isabel Stehli.

Cheverus’ Rawcliffe, Emily Rodrigue and Staci Swallow, Deering’s Doria Juarez, Samantha Sivovlos and Lily Worthley, McAuley’s Delaney Regan and Portland’s Barry, Cardona, Ashley Frank, Camille Hanley and Quinn Lavigne all qualified for the SMAA All-Academic team.

Waynflete’s Cole (one goal) and Martha Veroneau (three goals) helped the “Red” team beat the “Navy” team, 24-13, in the Senior All-Star Game. The Red squad also included Portland’s Lavigne. Deering’s Sivovlos played for Navy. Waynflete’s Cathie Connors coached the Red squad.

Waynflete’s Cole was an All-American selection.

Cheverus’ Logan and Waynflete’s Martha Veroneau were All-American honorable mentions.

Cheverus’ Caiazzo, Logan and Rodrigue, McAuley’s Lake and Regan and Waynflete’s Amelia Deady, Leigh Fernandez, Walker Foehl, Millard and Moore all qualified for the Academic All-American team.

Outdoor track

The SMAA outdoor track and field boys’ first team included Cheverus’ Brady Foshay (800), Isaac Yeboah (300 hurdles) and Matt Cushing (javelin) and Deering’s Jared Bell (discus and shot put).

Cheverus’ James Campbell (400) and Nick White (discus) made the second team.

Cheverus’ Jake Dixon (200) and Mike Orne (high jump), along with Deering’s Bell (javelin), were honorable mention selections.

The girls’ first team featured Cheverus’ Kiera Murray (two-mile) and Anne Slattery (100 hurdles) and Deering’s Rashad Zagon (300 hurdles).

Cheverus’ Sarah Mount (400) and Deering’s Zagon (high jump) and Alexis Elowitch (javelin) made the second team.

Cheverus’ Murray (mile) and Hannah Robbins (pole vault), Deering’s Zagon (100 hurdles) and Katie Farrell (300 hurdles) and McAuley’s Elizabeth Houston (pole vault) were honorable mentions.

In the WMC, Waynflete’s Rowan Price was a girls’ second teamer in the high jump.

Boys’ tennis

Waynflete’s boys’ tennis team won its sixth straight Class C championship. The Flyers placed Patrick Ordway and Isaac Salas on the WMC singles first team.

Ben Shapiro made the second team.

Jon Tao was a doubles all-star.

In the SMAA, Cheverus’ John Devine and Deering’s Tyler Butler were singles first-teamers.

Portland’s Alex Abreu and Chris Eye made the doubles second team.

The SMAA All-Academic team included Cheverus’ Reed Fernandez, Michael Gordon and Connor Pothier, Deering’s Antonio Macomber and Portland’s Jon Gatti and Matt Livermore.

Girls’ tennis

On the girls’ side, Class C champion Waynflete placed Emily White on the WMC singles first team.

Phoebe Suva made the second team.

Abby Cough made the doubles team.

In the SMAA, Class A runner-up Portland put all three singles players, Margot Andreasen, Annette Denekas and Sophie Hulbert, on the first team. They were joined by Cheverus’ Caty Galligan and McAuley’s Devri Ramsey.

Cheverus’ Lan Zhou and Deering’s Maddie Abbott made the second team.

The doubles first team included Portland’s Kayla Berg and Lily Bruenjes.

The doubles second team featured Georgia Drew and Alyssa Vaccaro of the Bulldogs.

The All-Academic team included Cheverus’ Anna DiLisio, McAuley’s Caitlyn Connolly and Portland’s Bruenjes, Alyx Carbone, Kelli Dolan, Hulbert and Isabel Walter.
