The spring sports stretch run has begun and the next couple weeks promise to bring plenty of drama as local teams jockey for playoff spots.

Last week saw no shortage of big games and there are some compelling matchups on tap in the days to come as well.

Here’s a glimpse:

Baseball

Brunswick’s baseball team was eighth in the Eastern Class A Heal Points standings at press time with a record of 6-5 after losing at home to Edward Little (2-1) and beating visiting Skowhegan (3-2) last week and winning, 2-0, at Lawrence Monday. The Dragons were at Messalonskee Wednesday, host Mt. Blue Friday and go to rival Mt. Ararat Tuesday.

The Eagles were 0-11 and 13th after recent losses at Brewer (6-1), at home to Bangor (14-5), at Cony (10-0) and at home to Hampden Academy (4-2). Mt. Ararat was home against Edward Little Wednesday, visits Lawrence Friday and plays host to Brunswick Tuesday.

In Western B, Morse sat 4-7 and seventh after beating visiting Maranacook (3-2) and losing at Lincoln Academy (10-0) and at home to Belfast (5-2). The Shipbuilders go to Mt. View Friday, host Medomak Valley Tuesday and go to Oceanside Wednesday.

Softball

Morse’s softball team was 6-5 and 11th in Western B after sandwiching home wins over Maranacook (5-4) and Belfast (18-5) around a 7-0 loss at Lincoln Academy. The Shipbuilders go to Mt. View Friday, host Medomak Valley Tuesday and go to Oceanside Wednesday.

In Eastern A, Mt. Ararat was 4-7 and ninth after wins over visiting Bangor (14-3) and Hampden Academy (5-2) and a 5-1 loss at Cony. The Eagles were home against Edward Little Wednesday, visit Lawrence Friday and play host to Brunswick Tuesday.

The Dragons fell to 1-10 and 12th after recent losses to visiting Edward Little (19-3) and Skowhegan (16-0) and host Lawrence (15-3). Brunswick was at Messalonskee Wednesday, hosts Mt. Blue Friday and goes to Mt. Ararat Tuesday.

Boys’ lacrosse

While Brunswick’s boys’ lacrosse team stole headlines last weekend (see story), Mt. Ararat was 3-5 and eighth in Eastern A following a 14-6 home win over Marshwood Friday. The Eagles went to Cony Wednesday and host Brunswick Friday.

In Eastern B, Morse was 4-4 and seventh after losing at Maranacook (17-7) and at home to Westbrook (22-10) last week. The Shipbuilders were at Mt. Blue Wednesday, go to Gardiner Friday and visit Oak Hill Wednesday of next week.

Girls’ lacrosse

On the girls’ side, Mt. Ararat was 7-1 and second to Messalonskee in the Eastern A Heals following home wins last week over Oxford Hills (7-2) and Brunswick (15-3). The Eagles went to Messalonskee Tuesday and Brunswick Thursday and play at Oxford Hills Friday.

Brunswick was 3-5 and sixth entering Tuesday’s game at Edward Little. The Dragons lost, 15-3, at Mt. Ararat last week. Brunswick hosted Mt. Ararat Thursday.

In Eastern B, Morse was second to Oceanside at 4-2 after wins last week over visiting Winslow (11-7) and at Camden Hills (15-7). The Shipbuilders went to Freeport Tuesday and hosted Oxford Hills Wednesday, go to Gardiner Friday and visit Lewiston Tuesday of next week.

Outdoor track

Morse and Mt. Ararat’s outdoor track teams joined Medomak Valley and Oceanside for a meet at Belfast Friday. In both meets, the Eagles placed third and the Shipbuilders finished sixth. 

Brunswick joined Skowhegan at Edward Little. The Dragons were second to the Red Eddies in both genders.

Tennis

Brunswick’s girls’ tennis team was 10-0 and first in the Eastern A Heal Points standings at press time. Mt. Ararat was 4-6 and sixth. Morse was 7-4 and fourth in Western B.

Brunswick and Mt. Ararat’s boys were 1-2 in Eastern A at press time. The Dragons had a record of 9-1, while the Eagles were 10-1. In Western B, Morse was first at 10-1.
