SMCC softball opens on high note

The Southern Maine Community College softball team opened its season Saturday with a doubleheader sweep over visiting Vermont Tech, 12-3 and 13-7. Ashley Probasco and Kim Hunt each earned a victory. Probasco also had four hits, including a double and a triple. Alyssa Henderson had four hits and four RBI. Darcey Webster added three hits, three runs and two steals. The Seawolves (currently ranked sixth nationally in the USCAA Coaches’ Poll) return to action Friday when they host Johnston State College in a doubleheader. SMCC also welcomes Vermont Tech for two games Saturday and Massasoit Community College for a doubleheader Sunday.

The SMCC baseball team also opened against Vermont Tech in a twinbill. The Seawolves won the first game 9-5 behind Dan Walker. Vermont Tech won the second game, 10-3. Nathan Leeman had four hits, including a home run. Scott Nappi added three hits and three steals. SMCC (ranked fifth nationally) is home against Bridgton Academy Friday, hosts Vermont Tech in a doubleheader Saturday and welcomes Massasoit CC for two Sunday.

Local resident honored for academics at Connecticut College
South Portland’s Angela Giordano, a field hockey player at Connecticut College, recently was named to the national collegiate academic squad. Connecticut College was ranked among the top five schools at the Division III level in team academic ranking for the second year in a row.

Maine Masters swim team shines at New England tournament
The Maine Masters swim team, consisting of Dave Sawyer, Doug Pride, Mike LePage, Hodding Carter and Andrew Thomas, took part in the New England Masters swim meet at Harvard last weekend. Maine Masters wound up first in the USMS club division with 7,295 points.

South Portland coaching vacancies
South Portland’s athletic department is seeking to fill three coaching positions. At the high school, a junior varsity boys’ soccer and a freshman football coach are needed. An assistant track and field coach at Memorial Middle School is also sought.

South Portland boy wins wrestling title

South Portland’s Carson Porter, 5, won the 41-pound weight class at the state championships held last weekend at Noble High School. Porter won the championship match with a pin at the 54-second mark of the first period.

Bruins alumni to face local hockey players
Former Boston Bruins will face local high school players Friday at 7 p.m., at the Cumberland County Civic Center. The Portland Firefighters Union is encouraging local residents to show support by making a contribution.

The Greater Portland Men’s Over-50 softball league located in Portland and South Portland and now in its 11th season, is seeking players for the 2009 season. Players who turn 50 prior to Dec. 31 are eligible.
