Unified team reaches regional final
The first-year Deering/Portland Unified basketball team continued to write an improbably wonderful story last week, winning two more playoff games to reach the South Region Final. After going 4-4 in its debut regular season, third-ranked Deering/Portland eliminated No. 14 Brunswick, 58-44, in the first round. A hard-fought 24-19 victory over No. 6 Yarmouth followed in last Tuesday’s quarterfinals and two days later, in the semifinals, Deering/Portland upset host and No. 2 seed Westbrook, 24-21. Deering/Portland went to undefeated, top-ranked Lisbon for the regional final Tuesday and if the magical run continued, the first-year squad would play for the state championship Thursday.
