Close calls at wrestling state meet

The Class A wrestling state championship meet was held Saturday at Noble High School in North Berwick. Portland tallied 24.5 points to place 12th, Deering (16 points) tied York/Traip and Morse for 17th and Cheverus (1) was 22nd. Deering’s Michael Darling got to the final at 285 pounds, but lost to Nokomis’ Hunter Glidden, 5-2. Portland’s Zach Elowitch (152) and Clautel Buba (170) won the consolation finals in their respective weight classes. 

Boys’ hockey season winds down

The curtain will come down on the boys’ hockey regular season this week and the playoffs begin with the quarterfinals Tuesday of next week. Cheverus was 7-8-1 and fourth in the Class A South Heal Points standings at press time after a 4-3 overtime loss to visiting Thornton Academy and a 4-1 home victory over South Portland/Freeport/Waynflete last week. Jesse Pierce, Luke Trickey and Chris Vallee had the goals in the loss. In the victory, Kieran Conley, Jesse Cyr-Brophy, Cam Dube and Sean Walsh all tickled the twine. The Stags were at Thornton Academy Tuesday and close the regular season at home Thursday versus Noble/Wells. The Portland/Deering co-op team was 5-12 and eighth in A South at the start of the week (eight teams make the playoffs) following a 3-2 loss at Yarmouth and a 4-3 win over Cape Elizabeth. Thornton Academy pays a visit in the finale Thursday. The South Portland/Freeport/Waynflete co-op team started the week seventh in A South with a 5-9-2 record and after hosting Noble/Wells Monday, closes at home versus Windham/Westbrook Thursday.

Maine Baseball Hall seeking nominations

Girls’ lacrosse officials needed

The Maine Women’s Lacrosse Officials’ Association is offering classes for adults who want to officiate girls’ lacrosse this spring. Classes will be held at four different locations, including Falmouth High School and Thornton Academy in Saco. The cost for the course is $55. FMI, 721-0708 or mainewloa.com.

Training/racing program getting underway
