Two local lineman named Gaziano Award finalists

Cheverus’ Frank Curran (defense) and Portland’s Charlie Kovarik (offense) were named Monday as finalists for the Frank J. Gaziano Award, given to the state’s premier senior linemen. Curran was a captain of the 2015 squad, finished the season with 63 tackles and five sacks and was named lineman of the year in Class A North. Kovarik helped the Bulldogs rush for more than 3,500 yards en route to a trip in the Class A state final and earned all-conference honors. He was also a member of the All-Academic team and received the National Latin Exam Bronze Medal and U.S. Army Reserve Scholar Athlete Award. The winners will be announced Saturday, Jan. 30 in Augusta.
