Locals compete at individual golf states

Five city golfers took part at the individual golf state championship meet Saturday at Natanis Golf Course in Vassalboro. In Class A, Cheverus’ Tom Higgins and Deering’s Alex McGonagle shot an 85 to tie for 23rd. Cole Anderson of Camden Hills took the title with an 18-hole round of 72. Cheverus’ Alex Jacobs shot an 88 to tie for 30th, while teammate Ryan McSorley was 39th with a round of 93. In Class C, Waynflete’s Will Lewis shot a 95 and tied for 19th. Logan Thompson of Mattanawcook Academy won the crown with a 77.

Cheverus names new girls’ hockey coach

Former Portland Pirates standout and one-time North Yarmouth Academy boys’ hockey coach Kent Hulst has been named the new coach of the Cheverus girls’ hockey program. Hulst replaces Amy McNally, who left the Stags to take over the NYA girls’ program. 
“Kent is an experienced former professional ice hockey player and longtime coach,” said Cheverus athletic director Gary Hoyt. “We’re excited to welcome Kent to our athletic staff.” 

St. Joe’s hosting shooting clinic

St. Joseph’s College’s women’s basketball team, under the direction of coach Mike McDevitt, is conducting a shooting clinic for girls in Grades 3-9 Sunday, Nov. 1 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Harold Alfond Center at St. Joe’s. The fee for the clinic is $35 in advance or $45 the day of the clinic. FMI, 893-6671 or
