SUBHEAD-SMCC sweeps rival
Southern Maine Community College’s men’s and women’s basketball teams ended the 2008 portion of their schedule on a high note Thursday night by beating their top rival, Central Maine Community College, at home. The women rallied from a halftime deficit to beat CMCC 68-65 behind Darcey Webster’s 19 points. Alyssa Henderson (16), Brittany Rich (12) and Rachel Del Camp (11) also scored in double figures. Del Camp also grabbed 15 rebounds. SMCC improved to 7-4. In the men’s game, the Seawolves (now 11-2) broke open a tight game in the second half and went on to a 92-77 victory behind 28 points and 16 rebounds from Coleman Findlay. Joe Jardine added 16 points and Josh Tuplin had 11. Both teams will resume play in January.
SUBHEAD-SP alumni basketball tournament upcoming
The South Portland basketball program is hosting a co-ed 3-on-3 alumni basketball tournament to be contested Friday at Beal Gymnasium. The only requirement is that players need to have competed for at least one year for the Red Riots. Teams must have someone over age 40 on the team and there must be a woman on the court at all times. Cost is $50 per team with money being split between the boys’ and girls’ programs.

SUBHEAD-Boys and girls’ youth lacrosse winter sessions upcoming
Maine Elite Youth Lacrosse is offering winter programming for boys and girls in grades 2 through 8. The sessions feature a balance of competitive game play and instruction. A girls’ winter session goes Saturday nights through Jan. 3 with grades 2 through 5 going from 6 to 7 p.m. and grades 6 through 8 playing from 8 to 9 p.m. The first boys’ winter session runs the same nights from 6 to 8 p.m. A second boys’ session runs Sunday mornings from Jan. 18 through March 22 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
SUBHEAD-YourSpace hosting pickup lacrosse
YourSpace, formerly Gorham Sports Center in Gorham, is hosting middle and high school pickup lacrosse on Wednesday afternoons. Girls play from 4 to 5 p.m. Boys go from 5 to 6 p.m. Cost is $10 per hour. A five-week league will begin Feb. 25.
