The calendar might say it’s fall, but the basketball season has begun at Southern Maine Community College. The Seawolves men’s squad opened with a pair of wins at the Can-Am tournament in Auburn, downing St. Thomas University (63-53) and the University of New Brunswick-St. John’s (83-77). SMCC’s home opener is Saturday against Williamson. The women’s squad also went 2-0 at the Can-Am tourney, downing Cegep Champlain St. Lawrence (59-52) and UNB-St. John’s (49-44). The Seawolves’ home opener is Sunday versus Berkeley (New York). Wrapping up fall, SMCC’s men’s soccer team got to the Yankee Small College Conference final by beating St. Joseph’s (Vermont), 2-0, but lost there to the University of Maine-Machias (3-0), to finish 8-4-1.
