It’s been a busy week with more to come for local softball and baseball teams.

The South Portland American All-Stars 11-12 softball team, the state champion, was 2-1 in pool play in the Eastern Regional tournament at press time. South Portland enjoyed wins over Milford, Connecticut (10-3) and Bristol, Vermont (10-7) before suffering a 10-0 loss to Massachusetts Tuesday.  In the first victory, Abby Young had three RBI, while pitching standout Taylor Whaley allowed three hits and scored a pair of runs. Against Vermont, Laurine German (three RBI, two runs) and Michelle Medici (two hits, four runs, two RBI) were the offensive standouts. South Portland faced Rhode Island Wednesday (too late for press).

The South Portland National Little League baseball team is still stinging after coming oh-so-close to winning the state title. South Portland made it to the championship round and had two chances to beat Bangor East for the crown, but lost both games, 13-2 and 4-3.

Scarborough’s 13-year-old Babe Ruth state championship team  will begin play in the New England tournament in Leominster, Mass., on Friday.
