South Portland senior David Fiorini, joined by his brother, Jack, his parents, Tom and Sally, and his teammates, signs his National Letter of Intent Thursday to attend and play lacrosse at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell.
“I’m happy I get an opportunity to play in college,” said Fiorini, who plans to play attack and is undecided on a major. “I’ve dreamed about it since I picked up a lacrosse stick.”
Fiorini becomes the latest in a long line of Red Riots to play lacrosse in college. Jack Fiorini is currently at Syracuse University and Tom Fiorini is South Portland’s varsity coach.
“He’s not my Dad when I’m playing,” David Fiorini said. “He makes it hard on me. He pushes me and he’s made me as good as I am now. Jack makes sure I keep playing hard.”
“Anytime any of my players can play in college I get excited,” said Tom Fiorini. “We’ve had kids go on and have success. As a Dad, I’ve always said the boys can play any sport they want as long as it was lacrosse in the spring. To get any kid in the state of Maine to play Division I is exceptional. To get two kids from one family, we’re just plain blessed.”
