While the South Portland boys’ team was competing for a Class A state title Saturday night, the girls’ squad had its moment in the limelight prior to the game when it was given the Western Class A Sportsmanship Award. The Red Riots won the banner for the fifth time.
“As a program, we stress doing things the right way,” said longtime South Portland coach Mike Giordano. “This is one way to measure that. It is an honor when your peers feel that you are worthy of the sportsmanship banner. I am extremely proud of our girls and the way they represent our community.”
