South Portland was the lone local gridiron winner last weekend.

The Red Riots improved to 3-1 with an impressive 41-14 home victory over Noble. South Portland shot to a 14-0 lead after one quarter and pulled away by halftime, 34-8. The Red Riots added another score in the third period and went on to the easy win.

Duncan Preston completed 16-of-20 throws for 248 yards and three TDs. Joey DiBiase ran for 142 yards and three scores on 20 attempts. Jordan Susi (107 yards on four catches), Hayden Owen (eight catches, 71 yards) and Matthew Stearns (one catch for 24 yards) all caught a touchdown pass.

South Portland (third behind Bonny Eagle and Thornton Academy in the Western A Crabtree Points standings) has a big test at dangerous 2-2 Sanford Friday night. Last year, the Red Riots lost at home to the Spartans, 46-12.

Scarborough fell to 1-3 with a grueling 34-26 loss at Bonny Eagle. The Red Storm took the early lead on a TD pass from quarterback Ben Greenberg to Chris Cyr, but the Scots, thanks in part to two interceptions and a Scarborough TD called back due to a penalty, rallied to go ahead, 13-6. A long kickoff return for a score by Cyr brought Scarborough within 13-12 at halftime, but Bonny Eagle scored 14 straight in the third period to lead, 27-12. Greenberg again hooked up with Cyr  and Cyr had a two-point conversion run to make it 27-20, but the Scots got a TD pass of their own to make it a 14-point game. A late Greenberg run made it 34-26, but the Red Storm could draw no closer, as a last-ditch onsides kick failed to go the necessary 10 yards and Bonny Eagle was able to run out the clock.

Scarborough (sixth in the Crabtrees), in desperate need of a win, plays host to 3-1 Biddeford Saturday at 3 p.m. Last year, the Red Storm and Tigers didn’t play.

In Western C, Cape Elizabeth went to Livermore Falls last weekend riding high after an impressive win over Wells, but the Capers proved to be no match for the Spruce Mountain Phoenix and fell to 2-2 with a 36-14 loss.

Before Cape Elizabeth knew what hit it, it trailed, 22-0. Christian Lavallee (15 carries, 113 yards) had touchdowns runs of 2- and 42-yards for the Capers. His first score put Cape Elizabeth on the board with 2:30 left in the first half. His second pulled the Capers within 28-14, but they could draw no closer and went down to defeat.

Cape Elizabeth (fifth in the Western C Crabtrees) looks to go back over .500 Saturday at 3 p.m., when it has a first-ever meeting at Freeport (2-2).
