Students reach semifinals in National Merit program

EVANSTON, Ill. — Eleven students from local high schools were recently named semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship program by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Students qualify for the scholarship program by receiving the highest scores in the state in the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (psat/nmsqt).

Qualifying students are Ethan N.  Dininno, John A. Harrison, Julia G. Hintlian, Gregory M. Howard, William C. McCarthy, Maggie C. Rabasca, Charlotte W. Rutty of Cape Elizabeth High School; and Alexander M. Henny, Samuel C. Moore, Susan M. Rundell of Scarborough High School; and Maine School of Science and Mathematics student Nikolai Hersfeldt of South Portland.

The South Portland High School Marching Band is in full swing with its annual High School Marching Band Fall Shows, which kicked off Sept. 17 at Lawrence High School, in Fairfield.  This year’s marching band welcomes a record number of 84 members and is focusing on the music of Trevor Rabin.
