South Portland High School students build and launch a boat

Last week, students in the South Portland High School Learning Alternatives math class launched the dory skiff S.S. Douglas into Casco Bay. The students spent the past year building the boat, working with the Compass Project in Portland, where they learned how to apply basic math skills to the boat building process. 

South Portland talent performs at the All-State Music Festival

Fourteen SPHS students represented their school recently at the 58th annual All-State Music Festival at University of Maine in Orono. Students selected to perform in the choras included altos Ali Abramson, Paige Doane, Lauren Purdy, Carly Sobczak; tenor Adam Sobczak; bass Ethan Benevides and Matt LaBerge. The orchestra was comprised of Markie Amadei, Shawn Everest, Mackenzie Mayes, Jenny Fletcher, Taylor Knowles, Alex Quinn and Chuck Key.

John Chapman, a descendant of Johnny “Appleseed” Chapman, visited the Viles Arboretum in Augusta with a gift of an apple tree from one of the original Ohio plantations created by Johnny Appleseed more than two hundred years ago. All present listened to John as he told the original story of Johnny Appleseed and answered many questions about this American icon of colonial days. Katherine Clay, an eight-year-old  Pond Cove Elementary School student, travelled all the way from Cape Elizabeth to participate in the planting ceremony.
