SHS Decathlon Team
holds all night fundraiser

SCARBOROUGH — The Scarborough High School Academic Decathlon Team is seeking sponsors for a 24- hour study session to raise funds for the team.

The “Cram-A-Thon” fundraiser is being held at Scarborough High School from 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5 through 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6.  

The Decathlon Team is tested at competitions on 10 subjects, including math, science, economics, language and literature, art, music and essay writing. 

They will next compete at the Maine State Championships held at the end of the month. 

To make a tax deductible donation to support the team, a check made payable to SHS Academic Decathlon can be sent to SHS Academic Decathlon Team, Scarborough High School, 11 Municipal Dr., Scarborough, ME 04074.

Biddeford Savings donates
to SHS student aid fund

SCARBOROUGH — Biddeford Savings recently presented a $575 check to Student Council leaders at Scarborough High School to help fund the Student Aid & Assistance Fund.

The fund helps SHS students who are facing financial hardships. Any student can submit an application for a grant, which can range from requests to help buy a prom dress, offset school athletic fees, or medical expenses. The fund has a balance of more than $8,000 thanks to the Biddeford Savings grant. While the fund is administered by the Student Council, the applications are reviewed anonymously, with only the faculty advisor aware of the applicants identity.

Nine band members and one chorus member from South Portland High School were selected for the Maine Music Educators Association All State Jazz Bands and Chorus. Nearly 500 high school music students from across the state auditioned for a spot in the 32-member band and 38-member chorus. Commander Sam Flint of the VFW Post 832 of South Portland, pictured left, presented a certificate and check to Stephenie Felt of Scarborough High School who won first place in the annual Voice of Democracy essay contest sponsored by the VFW Post 832. She also took third place in the District 10 level and for the Department of Maine, earning a $500 savings bond.
