SPHS jazz musicians are award-winners
The South Portland High School’s Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Craig Skeffington, took second place out of 16 bands in Division 3 at the Berklee Jazz Festival in Boston. In addition, trombonist Owen Doane received an Outstanding Musicianship award in Division 3. More than 150 bands from New England to Denmark performed at the festival, which annually draws over 3,000 high school students. It was the 32nd year that South Portland High School performed in the national festival.
SoPo woman completes research
Keirstan Field of South Portland, a member of the class of 2017 majoring in mechanical engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, recently completed an intense, hands-on research project in Boston Project Center. The project was titled Advancing Renewable Thermal Programs through Case Studies.
Costa Rica site of studies
Allyse LeBlanc of South Portland is studying abroad this semester at Veritas University in San Jose, Costa Rica. LeBlanc is majoring in psychology and is a member of class of 2017.
Student athlete recognized
Logan Gaddar of South Portland has been chosen for a year-end award from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute after helping the Engineers to a 9-2 overall record, a share of the Liberty League Championship and a victory in the ECAC Asa S. Bushnell Bowl Championship.
Rensselaer’s top wide receiver, Gaddar was chosen as the co-Offensive Player of the Year. He led the team with 54 catches for 772 yards and eight touchdowns. He had at least three receptions in 10 games and touchdown catches in five contests. He was first in the league in TD catches, second in receiving yards and receiving yards per game and third in receptions, receiving yards and receptions per game (5.2). He was All-League First Team.
The Engineers, who are coached by Ralph Isernia, finished the season ranked eighth in the ECAC Lambert Trophy Poll.
