Local students make dean’s list

The following students made dean’s list at their respective college or university.

Student to receive MPA Principal’s Award

Emma Kane, a senior at South Portland High School, has been selected to receive the 2014 Principal’s Award. The award, sponsored by the Maine Principals’ Association, is given in recognition of a high school senior’s academic achievement and citizenship. Kane, Principal Ryan Caron, and other award winners and their principals will attend an honors luncheon at the Spectacular Event Center in Bangor on Saturday. At the luncheon, students will be presented a plaque and 10 $1,000 scholarships will be awarded. This year, five of the scholarships were funded through the MPA Scholarship Golf Tournament and support from Berlin City Auto.

South Portland jazz bands play winning notes

On March 14-15, three jazz combos and two jazz ensembles from South Portland High School, directed by Craig Skeffington, to the Maine State High School Instrumental Jazz Festival at Hampden Academy. On the first day, the Jazz Combo C group placed second in its division, while Jazz Combo B and Jazz Combo A won their divisions. Senior Taylor Knowles and junior Alex Quinn won Outstanding Musicianship Awards. Later in the day, Jazz Ensemble 2 placed second in the Multi Jazz Band category, and freshman drummer Sophia Cummings received an Outstanding Musicianship Award. On the second day, Jazz Ensemble 1 won a Gold Standard for its performance, and Quinn won an Outstanding Musicianship Award. The Jazz Ensemble was one of two of nine bands to make the Night Finalss. The judges awarded first place to Jazz Ensemble 1.
