Scarborough students raise most funds in event history

Students from Scarborough Middle School raised over $10,000 for the Frannie Peabody Center at the school’s 26th Annual Ed Wimert Memorial Bike/Walk-A-Thon for AIDS.

The $10,000 total is most money raised by the event in the past five years, and is almost double the amount raised in 2011. Over 100 students participated in the event this year. The bike/walk-a-thon began in 1986, and has raised $200,000 for the center over the years.

The Frannie Peabody Center is Maine’s largest HIV/AIDS service organization, providing comprehensive services for over 500 people living with HIV/AIDS as well as prevention services for at-risk populations.

Elizabeth Albahary,  an elementary-school student from Scarborough, has donated her $50 prize from a local singing competition to the American Red Cross relief efforts for Hurricane Sandy.

In November, Albahary participated in a competition at Bates College, held by the state chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing. After winning the competition, she immediately asked her mother if she could donate her award to the Red Cross. Albahary had watched televised coverage of its relief work, and was moved by the suffering caused by the storm in New York and New Jersey.

Albahary is now encouraging all kids to send just one dollar to the American Red Cross to help.
