SOUTH PORTLAND — Children’s book author Virginia Brown and illustrator Dawn Prindall recently spent the day at Kaler elementary School reading their book, “The Tangled Loon,” and teaching students about loons, a healthy aquatic environment and the process of writing and illustrating a book.

Children got the chance to look through the “Loon Kit” Brown and Prindall borrowed from the Maine Audubon. Using the kit, the two created games and activities that taught the students about loon migration and the obstacles that birds face in order to survive.

Brown’s book is based on a real life loon rescue on Mooselookmeguntic Lake near Rangely. Her husband and neighbor, Jim Langford, helped free a loon who had become tangled in a fishing line.

SOUTH PORTLAND – The South Portland High School Jazz Band, Jazz Combo and Jazz Ensemble have found great success regionally and locally in the month of March.
