Locals to cap high school career in benefit soccer game

Several local soccer standouts will put a bow on their high school careers when they part in the 25th annual SMAA-WMC all-star tournament to benefit Special Olympics Maine Tuesday at Westbrook High School. The women’s game starts at 6 p.m. The men’s game is slated to start at 8 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students. The women’s game features Cape Elizabeth’s Kathryn Clark playing for the Western Maine Conference team (which is coached by Cape Elizabeth’s Craig Fannan) and Scarborough’s Katherine Kirk and Sam Sparda and South Portland’s Aimee LaPlante and Samantha Munson playing for the Southwestern Maine Activities Association squad (coached by Scarborough’s Mike Farley). In the men’s game, Cape Elizabeth’s Eddie Galvin, Noah Haversat and Griffin Thoreck will play for the WMC. Scarborough’s Ian Corey and South Portland’s Henry Curran and Silas Zechman will play for the SMAA team.

Jeff King Memorial Scramble upcoming

The 9th annual Jeff King Memorial Golf Scramble will be held Friday, Aug. 14 at Val Halla Golf Course in Cumberland, beginning at 8 a.m. The event is hosted by the South Portland High School football and hockey boosters and honors the memory of the former SPHS student-athlete and raises funds for interscholastic football and hockey programs.
