SMCC teams win conference titles

The Southern Maine Community College baseball and softball teams both captured Yankee Small College Conference championships last weekend. The Seawolves baseball team hosted the tournament and after enjoying a bye into the championship game, defeated rival New Hampshire Technical Institute, 4-1, behind a three-hitter from Daniel French. Former South Portland High standout Zach Horton was named the tournament’s Outstanding Offensive Player after going 2-for-3 and driving in a run. SMCC (22-20-1) hosts Bridgton Academy in a 3-game 302 Challenge Cup beginning Friday to end the season. Softball had to travel to NHTI, where it also won top honors. After beating Eastern Maine CC, 8-4, in the semifinals, the Seawolves eked out an 11-9 win over Central Maine CC in the final to finish the year 9-17.
