Scarborough’s Mary Redmond has verbally committed to play basketball at St. Leo’s University in Florida. Redmond played basketball and softball for the Red Storm.

South Portland announces preseason practice schedules

South Portland High School has announced practice schedules for the start of the 2013 fall sports season, Monday, Aug. 19. Football goes from 7 to 10 a.m. and from 2:30 to 5 p.m. at Wainwright Farms. Boys’ soccer practices from 9 to 11 a.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. at Wainwright, where girls’ soccer will also practice from 9 to 11 a.m. and again from 3 to 5 p.m. Field hockey practices from 8 to 11:30 a.m. at Wainwright. Boys’ cross country goes from 8 to 9:30 a.m. in the school parking lot. The girls’ team meets at the track at 8 a.m. Golf will practice at South Portland Municipal Golf Course. The time will be announced (check the school website). Volleyball is yet to be announced, while cheering meets from 12-1:30 p.m., in the park across from Beal Gymnasium. Student-athletes’ proof of a physical examination, a 2013-14 athletic contract, health questionnaire and permission to publish release forms must be on file in the athletic office prior to participation. Officials training course upcoming

The Western Maine Board of Soccer Officials is conducting their annual New Officials Training Course Saturday, Aug. 10, at the Gorham Municipal Center’s Recreation Department. The one-day clinic is followed by several on-field training sessions with seasoned officials. There is a small fee. Lunch and rulebooks are provided. The Board provides officials for all middle school, freshman, JV and varsity soccer in York and Cumberland counties. Local soccer players to compete in Special Olympics benefit game

Several recently graduated local soccer standouts will compete in the 23rd annual Special Olympics Maine benefit fundraiser Tuesday, Aug. 6, at Hannaford Field in Cape Elizabeth. The women’s game is at 6 p.m. The men play at 8 p.m. Aug. 8 (same times) is the rain date. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students. The Southwestern Maine Activities Association men’s team includes Austin Downing and Trevor Sparda of Class A state champion Scarborough and South Portland’s Damjan Draskovic. Cape Elizabeth’s Adam Haversat and Stefan LaRose are playing for the Western Maine Conference squad, which holds an 11-4-7 all-time advantage. Cape Elizabeth’s Ben Raymond is serving as a coach. In the women’s game, the SMAA team includes Sarah Martens and Ashley Philbrick of Class A champion Scarborough and Jenacee Bradbury of South Portland. The WMC team features Cape Elizabeth’s Erin Lyons and Maddy Riker. The WMC has a 10-5-7 all-time lead in the series. FMI, 879-0489 or markc@somaine.org.
