SMCC basketball season underway

The calendar may have read October, but basketball season is underway at Southern Maine Community College. The men’s squad, under 11th-year coach Matt Richards, opened with wins over St. Thomas University (59-52) and the University of New Brunswick-St. John (84-52) in the Can-Am Tournament in Auburn. Tong Akot had 15 points and 11 rebounds in his college debut in the win over St. Thomas.  Former Deering standout Jon Amabile had 14 points against UNBSJ. The women’s team, under first-year coach Julia Howe, dropped a gutwrencher in their opener, 62-60, to the University of New Brunswick-St. John. Esther Palmieri had a team-high 16 points and Roberta Trafton added nine points and 12 rebounds. The Seawolves have their home opener Friday. The women play Bunker Hill CC at 6 p.m. The men face Holyoke CC at 8 p.m.
