Locals run at New Englands

Class B state champion Cape Elizabeth was the 11th-best boys’ team (out of 30 who scored) at the New England cross country championship meet Saturday in Manchester, N.H. Scarborough placed 25th. The Capers were led by Liam Simpson, who had the eighth-best time and finished sixth for scoring purposes with a time of 15 minutes, 45.1 seconds on the 5,000 meter course. The Red Storm’s top finisher was Jacob Terry was 114th (75th for scoring purposes) with a time of 16:50.3. In the girls’ race, South Portland’s Shannon Conley competed as an individual and had the 63rd-best time (19:25).

SMCC men continue strong play

The Southern Maine Community College men’s basketball is off to a sizzling 6-0 start after recent wins over visiting Bridgton Academy (79-74), Navy Prep (77-66) and Hampshire College (100-29). Atencio Martin had 26 points against Bridgton, Jose Nouchanthavong scored 22 points against Navy Prep and Micah Welch had 15 points versus Hampshire College. The Seawolves go to Vermont Tech Saturday for their first true road game, then visit Dean College Wednesday of next week. The SMCC women improved to 3-1 with recent home wins over Navy Prep (85-68) and Hampshire College (85-32). Esther Palmieri registered 19 points and Nyalieb Deng added 12 points and 15 rebounds versus Navy Prep. In the win over Hampshire College, former South Portland standout Danielle McCusker had 15 points, Deng added 13 points and 11 boards and Stephanie Saavedra finished with 14 points. The Seawolves go to Vermont Tech Saturday and visit Dean College Wednesday.
